The BJP is expected to highlight the backward caste identity of Modi in the state where caste affiliations play a critical role in electoral outcomes. Opinion polls in India are, at the best of times, a hit and miss affair, though to be fair their strike rate in the recent past has been better. The BJP makes big gains, but not enough. The Congress loses big time, but a web of alliance possibilities offers it a safety net. The poll findings also show that Kumar will need an alliance with the Congress to mop up a major share of Muslim votes. India Inc's unease over central government's strong arm tactics must be worrying the Grand Old Party's leadership. According to the survey, Narendra Modi registered a sharp rise in popularity after he was named the BJPâs prime ministerial candidate on September 13. The SP is expected to lose heavily. This could put paid to Mulayam Singh Yadavâs plans to pitch himself as the PM candidate of the Third Front. |
