[Vijay Kudal] [VijayKudal] JAPANESE COMPANY TO ENTER HALAL MARKET

Vijay Kudal has posted a new item, '[VijayKudal] JAPANESE COMPANY TO ENTER HALAL MARKET'

JAPANESE COMPANY TO ENTER HALAL MARKET IN A VERY BIG WAY:

TOKYO — Nippon Express wants to enter the business of delivering halal products for Muslim customers.  It starts in Malaysia, but the Japanese delivery company hopes to turn this project into a global enterprise.

Halal rules do not cover just foods, such as a prohibition on pork products and alcohol, but also how foods and other products are processed and delivered. Nippon Express is working to become certified by the Malaysian government's program for halal-approved distribution companies. Kuala Lumpur launched the program in July, which is the first offered by an Islamic country that certifies halal-approved  logistics.

Nippon Express is the first Japanese company to apply for the program.

Being halal certified by Malaysia would also be of use in other Islamic countries, as Kuala Lumpur's halal approvals are considered more stringent than certifications offered elsewhere. If certified, Nippon Express would have the chance to develop a halal distribution network in Islamic countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The global halal market is estimated to be worth around $2 trillion.

Hub for all
Nippon Express has set up a six-person team at its Kuala Lumpur unit to focus on
the project.

This halal logistics team at Nippon Express (Malaysia) aims to be certified by spring. The team has also enrolled in a training program run by Malaysia's Halal Industry Development Corp. The training involves taking courses on subjects such as the halal supply chain and the mechanism of halal insurance.

Malaysia is trying to become a hub for the distribution of halal products.

The country's certification system is two-fold. First, all businesses, regardless of The country's certification system is two-fold. First, all businesses, regardless of industry, must obtain an MS 1900 certification, which concerns compliance with Islamic law.

Second, each company has to gain certifications specific to their business field, such as manufacturing or retailing. For a logistics company, this requires certifications for warehousing and transportation.

Many Japanese food makers have halal certifications, but Nippon Express would be the first Japanese logistics company to be certified as halal. Takuya Aizawa, the assistant group general manager at the company's overseas planning division, said this process has not always been easy.

"Certification for the logistics business is far more difficult to obtain than that for other businesses," Aizawa said.

Not so clear
For food makers, the rules are pretty clear — remove from products any ingredients that are non-halal. But for logistics companies, the line between halal and non-halal services is not as clear.

For example, for distributors that carry both halal and non-halal products, there are no specific guidelines yet on just how separated these different products need to be.

Nippon Express plans to have three trucks used exclusively for halal deliveries.

The company has mostly handled autoparts and electronics devices in Malaysia, but is planning to expand to food products once it obtains halal certification.

"We are carrying out feasibility studies from the viewpoints of both hardware (equipment and facilities) and software (services)," Aizawa said.
